Autism SymbolHaving both and eating disorder and autism is quite common, with around a third of people with an eating disorder being autistic or having autistic traits.

There can be overlapping features and autistic stimming, self-regulation or eating behaviours can be seen as eating disorder behaviours if this is not understood.

Autistic people often need a different approach to treatment then those who are not autistic, in part because the factors leading to the development of the eating disorder, or maintaining it, may be different.

Inpatient treatment can be particularly challenging for autistic people with sensory differences and can make it hard to access the support in the format it is offered.

We are working to make our services as autism and sensory friendly as possible.
